Price gouging after a disaster is illegal, but Amazon sure enables a lot of it. Despite the apparent ease with which Amazon could detect sharp rises in essential products on its site,instead, Amazon plays the victim: reporting the merchants who use its platform to state regulators, who praise Amazon’s cooperation, rather than investigating its role in enabling price gouging by third-party sellors – or the steep rises in prices for goods sold by Amazon itself.
