Groups Mask Partisan Attacks Behind Neutral-Sounding Names in Facebook Ads
Democrats, eager to pick up seats in Congress in the 2018 election, relied in part on groups with innocuous seeming names, selectively presenting information to Republicans. One such group, the Voter Awareness Project highlighted 2016-era conflict between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, in an effort to get Trump supporters in Texas not to vote for Cruz.
The group, my reporting showed, was actually run by a prominent Democrat. Other groups existed too, which I reported in collaboration with a reporter from the Texas Tribune.
The ads this article drew on were submitted to the Facebook Political Ad Collector project.
